Announcing the Winners of the 2022 Data Literacy Awards!
We’re thrilled to announce the winners of the 2022 Data Literacy Awards, chosen by popular vote from among the shortlist candidates nominated by the general public. More people than ever voted this year, indicating that the interest in Data Literacy as a movement is growing. We’d like to congratulate all of the candidates, runners up, and winners of this year’s awards. The voters selected these exemplary winners because they helped us all speak the language of data even more fluently in 2022. We’d like to congratulate all of them for being awarded this distinction.

1. Most Insightful Data Book (for books published in 2022)
2022 Winner: The Carbon Almanac by Seth Godin and The Carbon Almanac Network
The Carbon Almanac is a triumph in collaborative data analysis and writing. Created by 300 volunteers, this book is full of charts and diagrams about the most important issue of our time: the climate of planet Earth. Rather than teaching us directly about data, they teach us by using data to teach us about our world.
2022 Runner-Up: Functional Aesthetics for Data Visualization by Vidya Setlur and Bridget Cogley
2. Most Helpful Data Video Channel
2022 Winner: Storytelling With Data by Cole Knaflic and the SWD Team
It was a busy year for the Storytelling with Data YouTube channel, currently boasting over 13K subscribers. The team, led by best-selling data author Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic, published almost four dozen videos in 2022 alone, teaching their subscribers about important topics related to creating and presenting data to their audiences. 3. Most Interesting Data Podcast
2022 Winner: The Data Chief Podcast presented by Thoughtspot and featuring Cindi Howson
Presented by Thoughtspot and hosted by their Chief Data Strategy Officer, Cindi Howson, this podcast brings both quality and quantity with 22 podcast episodes airing in 2022. This past year, listeners got to hear Howson share her deep expertise in data leadership and discuss relevant topics with industry leaders from organizations like American Express and DoorDash, among many 0thers.

4. Top Data Community Initiative
2022 Winner: Viz for Social Good
Viz for Social Good is a community of volunteers that seeks to help mission-driven organizations use the power of data to make a positive impact on our world. Featured projects that the group ran in 2022 gave talented data experts the opportunity to assist organizations such as the India Water Portal, the UNDP Accelerator Labs Network, Bridges to Prosperity (B2P), Tap Elderly Women’s Wisdom for Youth (TEWWY), and Build up Nepal.
2022 Runner-Up: Data Leadership Collaborative by Tableau
5. Data Literacy Advocate of the Year
2022 Winner: Valerie Logan
To say that Valerie Logan is an influential figure in Data Literacy is an understatement. Logan essentially ignited an entire worldwide movement with her research and publications while she was at Gartner from 2015 to 2019, and even prior to that. These days, she runs The Data Lodge, where she gets the chance to work with leaders in organizations around the world who are creating their own data literacy playbook. Her community continues to grow, making it more and more valuable for members each year that goes by. Bravo, Val!
2022 Runner-Up: Susan Walsh, aka “The Classification Guru”
